Babelsberg Starry Night - Live at the campus babelsberg
The AIP invites you to a live Babelsberg Starry Night at the Babelsberg campus:
- 19:15: Lecture by Dr. Peter Weilbacher: 'Fire in the Fog – A Look at the Most Luminous Star-Forming Regions in the Universe' (in German)
- After the talk, we offer a guided tour of the research campus Babelsberg. If the sky is clear, we offer observations at one of our telescopes.
We look forward to your visit! Free admission, no registration required.

This event series is aimed at anyone interested in astronomy, regardless of prior knowledge. Researchers from the AIP will report on current topics and interesting projects from the world of astrophysics. Dr. Peter Weilbacher will start the series on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, with his lecture ‘Fire in the Nebula – A Look at the Most Luminous Star-Forming Regions in the Universe’ (in German). The event will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the conference room of the Maria Margaretha Kirch House on the AIP's Babelsberg research campus.
Star-forming regions are large clouds of gas and dust in which new stars are born. This lecture will present some of the largest and brightest star-forming regions in our cosmic neighbourhood as examples. Using images from various large telescopes, Peter Weilbacher will explain how stars are formed and when they make the surrounding gas glow most beautifully. Peter Weilbacher is a researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), he conducts research on so-called ‘starburst galaxies’ and in the field of instrument development.
Following the lecture, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in a tour of the AIP campus. If the weather is clear, we offer observations using one of the historic reflecting telescopes.
Entry is free, no registration required.
