Scientist/DevOps Position in EScience Section (w/m/d)

Scientists at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) work on a variety of astrophysical topics covering the full range from solar physics to cosmology. Key aspects are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics supported by a large technology team on spectroscopy, robotics, and e-science. The AIP is located in the beautiful Potsdam/Babelsberg area, at the South-western border of the Berlin metropolitan area. It continues the tradition of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam and the Berlin Observatory (founded in 1700) and has more than 200 employees.

The section Supercomputing and E-Science at AIP invites applications for a position within the team:

We are looking for a software developer, preferably with astrophysics or physics background, who wants to work in the intersection between astronomy and computer science.

The AIP E-Science group is participating in many scientific data infrastructure projects such as ESCAPE and NFDI, often in collaboration with other AIP science groups or sections, and leads one task area of the PUNCH4NFDI consortium. The E-Science team develops and operates several public astrophysical data archives for various surveys and projects. For example, AIP is a partner data center for the Gaia mission and also maintains the historical photoplates archive APPLAUSE. The 4MOST spectroscopic instrument is currently being developed at the institute and is expected to start science operations in 2025. The 4MOST public archive (4PA) is managed by the E-Science section.

The work includes developing and maintaining the 4MOST public data archive in collaboration with the 4MOST project. The tasks require programming and IT skills as well as domain knowledge in natural sciences, preferably in astrophysics. Familiarity with astrophysical spectroscopic observation data is appreciated. IT skills should include Python, Linux and programming experience. SQL, Django and Docker knowledge is an advantage.

The start date is negotiable, but expected to be in fall 2024. The initial appointment will be made for 2 years, with a possible extension, depending on performance and availability of funds.
