The Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for the position of

Spectrograph scientist (m/f/d)

for the development and support of the astronomical instrumentation/telescope project 4MOST. The successful candidate will interact closely with AIP project teams and scientists, collaborating institutions and suppliers. The successful candidate will work on the 4MOST project at AIP in collaboration with the large local project team and extensive external partner network.

Your Tasks

  • Support the verification activities in the AIP integration hall for 4MOST spectrographs, fibre positioner AESOP, Long Fibre Feed, and Calibration System.
  • Support 4MOST Verification Plan responsible with definition and execution of test procedures.
  • Maintain database of test results.
  • Hands-on support for integration, handling, and packing for shipment of 4MOST spectrographs and other subsystems.
  • Potentially support the unpacking and re-integration of 4MOST subsystems at the Paranal observatory.
  • Perform analysis of the requirements and provide alternatives/trade-offs when necessary.
  • Develop MAIT/MAIV processes, procedures and safe practices.
  • Assist in raising Non-Conformance Reports where applicable.
  • Provide design status and analysis reports to supervisors.

Your profile must include:

  • Master or PhD degree in astronomy or engineering.
  • Experience with instrumentation within the field of astronomy.
  • Experience with critical analysis and validation of designs and measurements.
  • Proficiency with modern data reduction techniques is highly desirable.
  • Ability to document designs and write reports and procedures using MS Office software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate efficiently and effectively with administrative, technical and scientific staff.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required, German language proficiency is desirable.

The position is offered on a fixed-term contract of 7 months. Salary and social benefits are calculated based on the German public service scale TV-L and commensurate with qualifications and experience in relation to the position.
