Dr. Florian Niederhofer
I am currently a postdoc at the AIP working in the 'Dwarf Galaxies and the Galactic Halo' group led by Maria-Rosa Cioni.
Scientific Interests:
- Magellanic Clouds
- Proper motion measurements of stars
- Dynamical Studies of stellar populations
- Star clusters and globular clusters
My current research work is focused on dynamical studies of star clusters within the Large Magellanic Cloud. This project is funded by my own DLR research grant.

Previous projects at the AIP included measurements of the proper motions of both Magellanic Clouds and the characterisation of large scale dynamical structures within the galaxies, using mainly data from the VISTA near-infrared survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC).
Before I came to Potsdam, I was a postdoc at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore with Nate Bastian, where I studied the multiple population phenomenon in star clusters within the Magellanic Clouds.
I obtained my Diploma in Physics and my Ph.D. in Astrophysics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich under the supervision of Markus Kissler-Patig and Barbara Ercolano.
During that time I also spent three years at the European Southern Observatory in Garching.
