Dr. Jaime Forero-Romero of the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam (AIP) has been selected by the International Astronomical Union as a 2011 Fellow for the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation (PPGF) Fellowship. In conjunction with this award, the 29-year-old astrophysicist will conduct research at the University of California, Berkeley in the United States for two years beginning in October 2011.

The PPGF Fellowship is awarded once a year in an international call for applications to a very promising young scientist in the field of theoretical, observational or experimental astrophysics and includes financial support of $50,000 US per year for a research stay at a host institution chosen by the applicant.

Colombian-born Jaime Forero-Romero is currently conducting research in the cosmology group at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam. The focus of his research is galaxy formation in a cosmological context: using extensive numerical simulations, the cosmologist studies the evolution of galaxies in the context of the history and evolution of our cosmos.

"At Berkeley, I will use this scientific approach to explore the observed properties of young galaxy populations in the epoch of reionization," Forero-Romero says. Even before his research stay in Berkeley, he is organizing an international workshop on this topic in Potsdam in September.

The key areas of research at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics. A considerable part of the institute's efforts aims at the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and E-science. The AIP is the successor of the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and of the Astrophysical Observatory of Potsdam founded in 1874. The latter was the world's first observatory to emphasize explicitly the research area of astrophysics. The AIP has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 1992.
