XMM-Newton SSC
The XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC) is an international ESA collaboration of institutes in Spain, UK, Germany and France and associated scientists in Europe, USA and Japan. Until June 2013, it was led by Leicester University (UK, SSC web page Leicester).
Responsibilities
Together with the ESA team at the XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre (SOC) at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), the SSC
- develops the science analysis software SAS for XMM-Newton,
- compiles the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogues,
- conducts the XID follow-up/identification programme for the XMM-Newton serendipitous X-ray sky survey,
- performs the pipeline processing of all XMM-Newton observations (SOC).
SSC-Potsdam
Within the consortium, the SSC members at the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP) have the responsibility to
- develop and compile the catalogues from overlapping XMM-Newton observations,
- develop and maintain the source detection software for the pipeline processing of the XMM-Newton EPIC data.
This work is done in close collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik in Garching. - contribute to the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogues.
- contribute to the XID programme.
For example, the AIP has triggered the XMM-EIS, the ESO public imaging on XMM-fields, and published the corresponding X-ray images and source lists.
