Design drawing of the GREGOR telescope. It has an aperture of 1.5 meter and is equipped with adaptive optics and a polarimetry system. It is designed for high-precision measurements of the magnetic field and the gas motion in the solar photosphere and chromosphere with a resolution of 70 km on the Sun, and for high resolution stellar spectroscopy.

Optical design of GREGOR. The telescope uses a 3-mirror Gregorian configuration with an f/1.75 lightweighted primary mirror (M1). A cooled field stop at the prime focus F1 provides a field of view of 300 arcsec. A polarimetry package is located near the secondary focal plane F2, at the center of the tube. A pupil image is formed between M6 and M7. These two mirrors are used as fast steering mirror and for adaptive optics. The effective focal length is 68 m and the final f/46 focal plane can be placed in two laboratories.

Field stop at primary focus of the main mirror serving to reduce the amount of light in the system. Only the light around the area of the investigated part of the sun's disk is selected.
